Sympolism is a series of essays on lessons I’ve learned throughout my life. When I’m in the moment of the lesson, I am unaware and totally oblivious to what I am learning. However, with hindsight, I can now clearly see why I went through the difficulties that I have, what I have learned from those traumatic times and how my life is simpler as a result of it.

I’ve had the honor of being a college professor for most of my adult life and have come to realize that the most impactful part of my teaching has not been the subject matter of the classes but the life lessons that I share with my students. They appreciate the topical information but they are most grateful for the inspiration, the lessons that help them to better understand themselves and how the world works.

I’m also a very visual person and do believe in the power of symbols. I believe that there are signs and guidelines all around us constantly but most of us are unaware of them because of the noise in our lives. Where we live, what we do, who we spend most of our time with are all symbols of who we are as people. Look around. What symbolizes you the most?

Sympolism, at it’s core, is a way to reduce the noise, clutter, turbulence, racket or whatever you want to call it that surrounds us all and helps to give us clarity on who we actually are as opposed to who we think we are. Once you truly understand who you are, you will have the tools to live a simpler and more meaningful life.
